Rozhovor s Františkem Zachovalem a Ivanem Svobodou o online artové televizi Artyčok.tv.

An interview with makers of Czech online art TV Artyčok.tv. (English version below)

Mohli byste představit váš projekt?
Artyčok.TV je nezávislá internetová HD televize při Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze; publikující novinky ze současné evropské výtvarné scény. Na hlavní stránce portálu běží deset nejaktuálnějších příspěvků. Databáze televize obsahuje zejména příspěvky z vernisáží výstav, rozhovory s umělci, kurátory, záznamy workshopů, soutěží či přednášek. Artyčok.TV provozuje Digitální laboratoř, AVU vPraze a Artyčok.TV, o.s.

Co bylo hlavním podnětem pro založení Artyčok.TV?
František Zachoval: Jeden z nejsilnějších impulzů byl fakt, že ve veřejnoprávní televizi nebyl žádný prostor, který by alespoň minimálně přibližoval výtvarnou scénu. A jestli tam tehdy byla nějaká skulinka, tak se zaměřovali na etablované umělce. Další a nejpodstatnějším myšlenkou bylo vytvořit prostor pro sdílení myšlenek, dokumentovat činnost nejmladší generace autorů a propojovat různé regiony.

Projekt vznikl na půdě pražské AVU, ovlivňuje tento fakt samotný obsah webu?
Ivan Svoboda: Obsah portálu je možná nepřímo ovlivněn situací, že osoby, které se na tvorbě Artyčoku podílejí AVU studovali a taky naše hlavní sídlo je současně v DigiLabu AVU. Jsme tím pádem v přímém kontaktu se studenty a umělci z našeho okolí a ti nás hodně informují o svých výstavách a my z tohoto důvodu je častěji navštěvujeme a natáčíme. Tento fakt hrál pravděpodobně větší roli v počátcích Artyčoku. V současné době tento trend úplně ustoupil a prostě si vybíráme kvalitní věci.

Mohli byste něco víc říct o sekcích Artprojekty a Videoart?
IS: Artprojekty jsou reportáže z uměleckých akcí, které se nedají považovat za klasické výstavy v galeriích. Jedná se především o záznamy performancí, happeningů či akcí ve veřejném prostoru. V sekci Videoart prezentujeme videa v plné délce, která nám umělci poskytli.

FZ: Další a podstatný princip sekce Videoartu je v tom, že reportáže z výstav kde jsou videoprojekce se hůře zaznamenávají a technologie našeho portálu může právě tyto díla pohodlně v plné kvalitě přenášet. Delší dobu také úzce spolupracujeme s Vědecko-výzkumným pracovištěm AVU (VVP) a doposud samostatné databáze se snažíme centralizovat a starší věci z archivu VVP již připravujeme k publikaci.

Podle čeho vybíráte videa?
IS: Máme určitý přehled o umělcích a jejich pracích. Oslovujeme autory, o kterých víme, že se kontinuálně věnují umění a jejich výstupem jsou mimo jiné i videa. Konzultujeme s nimi a snažíme se vybrat díla, která jsou pro ně důležitá, či vystihují jejich tvorbu a současně nám připadají zajímavá. Chceme zachytit široké spektrum různých přístupů, zpracování, technik které videoart nabízí.

Jak vnímáte současnou video art scénu v Čechách?
FZ: Tak jako všude jinde. Ve světě blogů, streamů, on-line archivů, všichni sledují své oblíbené RSS kanály a ta všudypřítomná kolektivní inspirace je prakticky okamžitá. Zdejší trh s videoartem není moc rozvinutý a proto to má na první pohled takový laciný charakter. Co je mi ale sympatické, že se sem přelila celosvětového vlna trendů bourání hranic mezi klasicky vnímaným videoartu, animace a experimentálního filmu. Video častěji vstupuje do kina, vizuální umělci více začínají pracovat spříběhem, který je příznačný více filmu a filmaři si začínají pohrávat skonceptuálními postupy. Videoart na tomto poli je dobře zvolený jednoduchý název, který je za pochodu redefinován a do budoucna pojme mnoho dalších forem a přístupů.

Video se stalo demokratickou formou umění, neuvažujete o tom, že byste Artyčok.TV otevřeli "široké mase" přispěvatelů, umělců – amatérů?
IS: V současné době, kdy musíme považovat vše co člověk nazve uměním uměleckým dílem je samozřejmě složitější rozhodovat co chápat jako videoart a co ne. Široké mase přispěvatelů otvírat Artyčok nebudeme. Je potřeba regulovat obsah webu, aby neztrácel v nepřehledném množství energii a držel se svého konceptu. A pokud nám nabídne umělec - amatér vlastní video, dokáže jej obhájit a zařadit do celkového uměleckého kontextu a nebude to „vyloženě špatné“ video, můžeme o prezentaci uvažovat.

FZ: Artyčoku není YouTube a doufám že ani nebude.

Plány do blízké i daleké budoucnosti?
FZ: Po třech letech existence nastal moment, že některé výjimečné akce jsou dohledatelné pouze už u nás a proto stále inovujeme v zálohách obsahu. Dále si stavíme vlastní síť přispěvatelů a to zejména na školách podobného ražení jako je AVU. Začínáme akvizovat zajímavé akce i v zahraničí, které překládáme do angličtiny a tím kompletně naší středoevropskou scénu otvíráme okolnímu světu.

Can you tell us about your project?
Artyčok.TV is an independent internet HD tv based at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague that features news from contemporary European art scene. Ten latest videos are located on the homepage. The database of the site contains mainly features from art openings, interviews with artists, curators, workshops, competitions or lectures. The project is administered by the Digital Laboratory at the Academy of Fine Arts and Artyčok TV, o.s.

What was the main impetus for establishing Artyčok.TV?
František Zachoval: One of the strongest impetuses was the fact that public TV didn’t enable even the slightest coverage of the art scene, and if there was any, it would focus on established artists. The other – most crucial – idea was to create a channel for sharing ideas, documentating the work of the youngest generation of artists and interconnect various regions.

How do you choose the videos?
IS: We have an overview of artists and their works. We approach artists about whom we know that they consistently create art and some of their works include videos. We speak to them and try to choose those works that are of an importance to them or that express what they do and that we find interesting at the same time. We want to capture a wide array of different approaches, executions and techiques provided by video art.

What do you think about the current state of video art scene in Czech Republic?
FZ: Same as anywhere else. In the world of blogs, streams, on-line archives everybody watches their favourite RSS channels and the omnipresent collective inspiration is virtually instant. The Czech video art market is not very developed  and therefore, at first glance, it has a sort of cheap nature. What I like is the fact that we the global trend of breaking boundaries between traditionally perceived video art, animation and experimental film has arrived here as well. Video gets to be shown in cinemas more often, visual artists are starting to work with a story that is more akin to film and filmmakers are starting to utilize conceptual approaches. Videoart within this field is a well chosen simple notion that is constantly redefined able to accept various forms and approaches.

Video has become a democratic form of art. Would you open Artyčok.TV for “wider mass of contributors”, artists – amateurs?
IS: These days when everything that is labeled as art has to be considered an artwork is much more difficult to decide what can be understood as videoart. We aren’t going to open Artyčok to a wide mass of contributors. It is necessary to have control over the contents of the website so it doesn’t lose its energy amid the mass of stuff and retains its concept. If an artists-amateur has a video, is able to justify it and place it in a wider artistic context and would not be an “outright bad” video, we would consider presenting it.
FZ: Artyčok.TV is not Youtube and I hope it will never become one.

What are your plans for near and distant future?
FZ: After three years of existence, a moment has arisen that some outstanding events can be only found on our web and therefore we are constantly trying to innovate back ups of content. We are also building our own network of contributors primarily on schools similar to the Academy. What is more, we are also starting to acquire interesting events abroad that we then translate into English and thus are opening our Central European scene to a wider world.
