Interview with Jaroslav Kysa, a Slovak artist and curator currently based in Prague.
Where are you from originally?
I come from Slovakia. I studied in Košice, which is a sort of Tibet of the East, a beautiful multicultural historical city. After graduating, I was an artist-in-residence at the Karlín studios in Prague, and I ended up staying in this city.
What type of medium do you work with?
I use a wide range of media from object to photography to videoart. I have been doing this since school - to be eclectic and this is what I like.
Why did you choose this type of medium in particular?
I choose the type of medium according to concept. When doing photography - it is usually documentations of my interventions in public space.
What inspires you?
Direct observations of my surroundings, which I modify and mould via installations and action. These arise according to current situations of a city, place or how I feel. As a specific source of inspiration, the interest in ways of executing and logic of creation process. The time spent in certain city at a certain place perennially provokes my imagination, my urge bordering on obsession to react. Interventions are spawned thanks to a combination of absorbing various accidental sensations. Disturbing action tassel the viewer from his or hers usual thought processes. Our environment becomes increasingly uncertain and doubted. I'm interested in the uncertainty of a place as well as the individual because the specificity of a place or cultural background have lost their meaning.
What are your plans for 2010?
I'm moving to London to be with my girlfriend for a year where I would like to create a project space for artists from Czechoslovakia. We'll see what happens.
The 120x120 Cover exhibition, curated by Jaroslav Kysa, starts on 4 February 2010 at the 66 GALLERY, Konviktská 30, Prague 1
